Table of Contents:
What can VyprVPN do?
VyprVPN can do so much more besides providing privacy & security.
Streaming: Does VyprVPN work with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and other services?
Yes. VyprVPN works with Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and other popular streaming services. During our tests, we were able to access American Netflix using several servers in the US.
We were also impressed to find that VyprVPN works with Netflix UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Japan, and others. This is quite impressive as most VPNs only unblock Netflix US.
Apart from Netflix, we were also able to access BBC iPlayer by just connecting to the UK region.
Other services that we were able to access are Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video. Their support page has a list of 40+ services that the VPN unblocks.
Does VyprVPN support torrenting?
Yes, VyprVPN supports torrenting. The VPN says that “because our service treats all traffic equally, peer-to-peer and BitTorrent traffic is allowed." The VPN also doesn't block any ports, and so you can use any server on the network for torrenting.
Does VyprVPN work in China?
Only a few VPNs promise users that they can bypass China's Great Firewall (GFW), and VyprVPN is one of them. The VPN offers a proprietary protocol known as Chameleon. This protocol is based on unmodified OpenVPN, but it has been equipped with obfuscation technology that scrambles OpenVPN packets to make them appear like regular HTTPS traffic.
Chameleon can therefore be used to bypass the deep packet inspection (DPI) blocking used in countries such as China, Russia, India, Turkey, Iran, and the Middle East. And since censorship rules are frequently altered, VyprVPN maintains a service status page. The page is frequently updated to show servers that are working well with the Chameleon protocol.
All the above makes VyprVPN one of the best VPNs for China.
Is VyprVPN Secure?
Yes, VyprVPN is a secure service. Here’s a look at the VPN in terms of privacy and security.
VyprVPN is based in Switzerland due to the country’s favorable privacy laws. The Swiss Federal Data Protection Act (DPA) and the Swiss Federal Data Protection Ordinance (DPO) protect all users' online privacy.
Does VyprVPN keep logs?
VyprVPN doesn’t keep any logs. This a huge improvement as the VPN used to record IP addresses and connection times despite being in a privacy-friendly country.
VyprVPN is a zero log VPN Service. We do not record or retain any data when you use the VyprVPN Service.
- We do not log a user's source IP address (typically assigned to the user by their ISP).
- We do not log the IP address assigned to the user when using VyprVPN.
- We do not log connection start or stop time.
- We do not log a user's traffic or the content of any communications.
- We are network neutral. We do not discriminate against devices, protocols, or applications.
- We do not throttle or rate limit your Internet connection.
The VPN didn’t even stop there during the changes as they went ahead and became one of the first publicly audited VPNs to confirm the no-logs claim. Leviathan Security did the audit, and they verified VyprVPN as a no-logs VPN. The results are available on the VyprVPN website in pdf form.
As part of our privacy analysis, we sought to find if VyprVPN leaks any IP addresses or DNS requests. We were glad to see that the VPN doesn’t have any leaks.
As an extra privacy feature, VyprVPN provides VyprDNS uses VyprDNS, which is a no-log DNS service. There’s also a kill switch to enhance privacy.
However, we also noticed that some of the servers that appear during a DNS leak test do not belong to VyprDNS (Powerhouse Management). Apart from VyprDNS servers, we could also see Google, Amazon, DigitalOcean, and Anexia servers.
We contacted the live chat support team about this, and the representative explained that it is an issue that stays out of their control. Not ideal considering that VyprDNS is meant to provide a no-log service, but overall, there’s nothing to worry about.
VyprVPN offers some of the best security standards. The VPN provides OpenVPN 256 connections using SHA 2 for authentication, with AES-256-GCM cipher as the default for the control channel. The handshake uses RSA 2048-bit, while Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman is used for key exchange.
Overall, VyprVPN offers industry-standard security. It then complements this using multiple protocols.
VyprVPN offers multiple features and functionalities, and the main ones are highlighted below.
Public WiFi Protection
Public WiFi Protection is a VyprVPN feature that automatically runs whenever you connect to an unknown WiFi network. The feature allows you to add your trusted networks, and it comes in handy when you connect to unsecured public WiFi hotspots.
VyprDNS – Proprietary Zero-Knowledge DNS
Golden Frog runs their own encrypted DNS service that is usually activated by default when using VyprVPN. This DNS doesn’t keep any logs (unlike ISP and third-party DNS services), and the fact that it is encrypted protects you from man-in-the-middle attacks. This way, your requests can’t be redirected.
Apart from that, you will benefit from the fact that you'll always use a DNS in the same country as the server. Some VPNs that use third-party DNS services can affect your browsing and streaming experience with geolocation errors.
VyprVPN is one of the first major VPNs to adopt WireGuard. The protocol is still young, but most experts mention it as the long-term replacement for OpenVPN. It is secure, much faster, and generally performs better than OpenVPN. It is now the default protocol on all VyprVPN apps.
Apart from WireGuard, VyprVPN still provides the industry-standard OpenVPN alongside IKEv2 and Chameleon. IKEv2 is faster than OpenVPN and is still secure, while Chameleon is meant for users in high-censorship countries.
NAT Firewall is an in-built VyprVPN feature whose aim is to increase security by blocking unrequested inbound traffic. Although most desktop devices have a firewall, the feature is quite useful for mobile devices, and it is also an upgrade on some firewalls. It prevents hackers and bots from looking for bugs in your operating system and mistakes in your OS firewall permissions. NAT Firewall runs on the server level, so you won’t need to activate it.
If you are interested in a VPN for Business, VyprVPN offers a VPN server-deployment solution that helps secure your cloud servers. You can implement the solution on DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and VirtualBox.
VyprVPN provides split tunneling within a feature known as Connection Per App. It is a limited feature only found in Android, macOS, and router apps. The advantage of Connection per App is that you can determine the apps that go through the VPN.
The feature comes in handy when you only use a VPN for a particular app or you have an app whose traffic you'd like to leave unencrypted. For example, if you only use a VPN for Netflix, you can set Netflix as the only app that goes through the VPN.
At the router level, split tunneling works in terms of devices. For instance, you can choose to have your computers and smart TVs go through the VPN while your mobile phone remains unencrypted.
Malicious Sites Block
This is another limited feature that is only available on the Android app. As its name suggests, the feature blocks sites associated with malware. If you try to open such a site, you will see an error message warning you that the site can harm your device. VyprVPN however lets you decide whether you can proceed at your own risk.
The VPN gets the list of blocked sites from Malwaredomainlist.com.
VyprVPN Server Network
One of VyprVPN’s strengths is its server network. It is not the largest, but the VPN company owns and operates all its servers and equipment. This means that VyprVPN servers are free from third-party interference, and they are more reliable. The same makes VyprVPN a tier-1 VPN, something only a handful of VPNs can boast.
The VyperVPN server network consists of 700+ VPN servers distributed across 70+ countries and using 300,000 IP addresses. These servers are located in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania, and they are well distributed to ensure that there’s always a nearby server.
You can't select a particular server location except for the US and Australia on the app. To ensure that users are not crowded in the same server, VyprVPN performs dynamic server switching.
Pricing & Plans
VyprVPN provides three plans, with all of them offering the same features.
- 1-month plan: Costs $12.95 a month, billed every month.
- 1-year plan: Costs $3.75 a month, billed $45 every 12 months.
- 3-year plan: Costs $1.66 a month, billed $60 every 36 months.
The 1-month plan is priced on the higher end. However, the 1-year and 3-year plans have some of the best prices we’ve seen around. And unlike other VPNs, this is not special introductory pricing. The VPN renews at the same prices.
Supported payment methods
VyprVPN allows users to pay through:
- Credit/ Debit cards
Unfortunately, the VPN doesn't support cryptocurrency payments. If that kills the deal for you, you can have a look at our recommended VPNs that accept Bitcoin.
Does VyprVPN VPN have a free trial?
No, VyprVPN does not provide a free trial. The VyprVPN free trial was scrapped in favor of a money-back guarantee.
Does VyprVPN VPN have a money-back guarantee?
Yes, VyprVPN provides a 30-day money-back guarantee. This guarantee allows you to test the VPN fully. To get your money back, cancel your VyprVPN account 24 hours before the period is over. You can then request a refund through the website.
The VyprVPN money-back guarantee applies for both monthly and yearly plans.
Getting started with VyprVPN
It’s now easier to get started with VyprVPN as the VPN site is no longer within the larger Golden Frog website. You can easily find information about the VPN, and there’s a Buy button that directs users to the purchase page.
The first step is to choose a plan among the three plans discussed before. You will then be required to provide your name, email, and password. From there, you can choose a payment method and provide your zip code. You can then activate your account.
Overall, the process is quite straightforward. However, some of the requested information is unnecessary and only increases the data they have about you. In our view, a username, email, and password are enough.
Which devices & platforms does VyprVPN support?
VyprVPN is one of the most compatible VPNs, and it outdoes most VPNs in terms of the apps provided. Here’s a list of the supported devices & platforms:
- Smart TV
All the above apps are compatible with WireGuard.
Apart from the above, VyprVPN provides guides on how to set up the VPN on DD-WRT, Tomato, AsusWRT, Synology NAS, and Blackberry.
Overall, this is quite impressive. You however can’t help noticing that Linux and browser support is missing.
Ease of use
The Windows and macOS apps look and work the same, with the only difference being split tunneling. For this VyprVPN review, we installed the Windows app on a PC running Windows 10.
The VyprVPN download file is light and just about 10 MBs, and so it downloaded in a few seconds. However, the installation period was longer than that of most VPNs, presumably because the app installs two different Tap drivers (both OpenVPN Tap adapter & VyprVPN Tap adapter).
After providing your VyprVPN login details, here’s how the app looks like.
The app is simple and easy to use. You can connect to the nearest server with just the click of a button. If you want to customize your connection, you can select the customization tab on the lower side.
Here, you can determine how the VPN app behaves under Public WiFi Protection, Automatic Reconnect, Startup Options, and Notifications. You can also open the Kill Switch, Protocol, and DNS settings.
The default DNS is VyprDNS, but you also choose to use a third-party DNS (not advisable). You can also leave OpenVPN adapter unchanged unless you have TAP issues due to another VPN. Under protocol, you can choose between WireGuard, IKEv2, Chameleon, and OpenVPN.
Moving on, the servers tab displays all servers and shows each server’s ping. You can sort the server list by country, region, or speed. From there, you can connect to a server of your choice.
We found the VyprVPN desktop app to be simple and intuitive.
The VyprVPN Android and iOS apps are quite similar to the VyprVPN Windows and macOS apps in terms of appearance. On both, you can connect to a server with a single click.
However, the iOS app is very stripped down, and the only advanced feature is the ability to choose a protocol. Apart from that, you can only add a trusted network and set automatic reconnection.
The Android app is more generous as it provides features such as blocking malicious sites, split tunneling, kill switch, protocol selection, and DNS selection.
The malicious sites feature is an important one as Android smartphones are a popular target. The split tunneling feature allows you to select apps that you want to either make them use the VPN or bypass the VPN. This means that you stay safe while also be able to access local news or your local bank if there’s no VPN server in your country.
How fast is VyprVPN?
To give you an idea of how fast VyprVPN is, we conducted several tests using nearby and distant servers. We used a base connection of 50 Mbps.
When connected to nearby servers, we averaged a speed of 42 Mbps. Distant servers gave us an average speed of 31 Mbps.
The above tests were conducted using OpenVPN for uniformity with our other reviews. However, the protocol unexpectedly performed better than WireGuard for distant servers. The speeds were similar for nearby servers.
Overall, VyprVPN provides average speeds. This is a sharp contrast to its performance in other aspects, and it’s one that the VPN can improve on.
VyprVPN Customer Support
VyprVPN does well in customer support as they provide 24/7 live chat support. This means that you can get connected to an agent in a few seconds, and in our case, it only took about 40 seconds.
Apart from the live chat and email/ ticket support, VyprVPN also maintains an extensive support center. It has lots of guides divided into Getting Started, FAQs, Troubleshooting, VyprVPN in China, Service Status, and Account Management.
Overall, we were impressed with VyprVPN support.
Is VyprVPN free?
No. It is a paid VPN, and there’s no VyprVPN free plan.
Can I get a VyprVPN premium free trial?
The VyperVPN free trial is no longer on offer. It has been replaced with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Why does VyprVPN discourage torrenting?
VyprVPN used to have a stance against torrenting, but the VPN fully supports torrenting now.
VyprVPN has been around for over 10 years, but the last three years have been crucial in the VPN's journey and made it worth recommending. The VPN now doesn’t keep any logs, supports torrenting, and has been swift to implement WireGuard. It has also improved its streaming capabilities and now works with all major streaming services.
Apart from that, the VPN's biggest strength is the fact that it works in China and other restrictive countries. If you are looking for a VPN that can bypass government censorship with ease, then VyprVPN is a strong candidate.
