We then created this VPNhub review to help you analyze the VPN and determine whether it’s the right product for you. During the review, we’ll also compare it to market leaders such as ExpressVPN.

What can VPNhub do?

Besides privacy and security, a quality VPN needs to offer extra functionalities that enhance everyday internet use.

Streaming: Does VPNhub work with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and other services?

VPNhub works with Netflix. During our tests, we were able to access US-only Netflix titles without any issues.

However, we couldn't access any other Netflix library, so VPNhub won’t make it to our list of the best VPNs for Netflix yet.

Apart from Netflix, VPNhub wasn’t able to access BBC iPlayer, which is unfortunate as the service is quite popular.

You also won’t be able to access Disney+ and Hulu.

Does VPNhub support torrenting?

Yes, VPNhub supports torrenting. However, the VPN states that you should not violate any copyrights by “uploading, transmitting, distributing, or otherwise making available any information or material made available through the service.”

This means that VPNhub may not be the best option for torrenting.

Does VPNhub work in China?

VPNhub offers OpenVPN Scramble (XOR obfuscation), which is usually helpful in bypassing VPN blocks. However, the VPN still states that the service may not be available in China and other highly censored regions such as the UAE and North Korea.

Privacy

VPNhub is operated by MG Billing US Corp, a subsidiary of the Canadian porn company, MindGeek. The company is registered in Delaware and based in California, which means that VPNhub is governed by US laws and regulations. The country is known for its massive surveillance, and it is a member of the 5-eyes intelligence-sharing agreement.

Apart from that, the biggest issue with being based in the US is that government institutions often request VPNs for user data using subpoenas and gag orders. However, as at the time of this review, VPNhub has a warrant canary. It states that states that "we have not received any National Security Letters or FISA court orders, and we have not been subject to any gag order(s) by a FISA court, or any other similar court(s) of any government.”

This doesn’t mean that the order won’t come, so a US-based VPN needs to maintain a zero-logs policy before it can promise anonymity. So, does VPNhub keep logs?

Logging Policy

VPNhub maintains a (very) detailed privacy policy that describes how just about all of your data is handled.

In a section titled “information we collect,” the VPN states that:

When you connect to the VPNhub VPN, we collect your internet protocol (IP) address, which we pseudonymize, immediately encrypt it and store it only for the duration of your VPN session. Your IP address is deleted after you disconnect from the VPN without storing or logging it. We do not associate your IP address with your online activities, and we do not store or log your IP address with your online activities.

This doesn’t sound bad as the IP address is not stored in a way that can identify you, and it is also deleted after the session.

The VPN further states that: “We do not attribute any specific website visits or app usage to any specific user. We do not keep logs of your online activities and will never associate any domains, websites or applications that you use with you, your device or your email.”

This privacy policy looks good overall. However, free users can’t count on maximum anonymity as the free version relies on ads. Although the VPN still won’t track or share data and IP addresses, it shares the location to advertisers on a city level. These advertisers may also collect your IP address when you are not connected to the VPN to serve you with localized ads.

Overall, VPNhub offers good privacy, especially for premium users.

Security

VPNhub offers security through AES-256 encryption, which is the highest and recommended standard. The VPN then uses HMAC SHA256 hash authentication and RSA-2048 handshake encryption. Perfect forward secrecy is implemented through DH-2048 Diffie-Hellman key exchange.

This is top-grade security, so no government or hacker can compromise your data.

The VPN also gives users the flexibility to determine the level of security they need. You can choose between the default AES-256-CBC and AES-128-CBC when using OpenVPN on the desktop apps.

You can also choose a protocol, which allows you to determine the balance between security and speeds. The available protocols are OpenVPN and IKEv2. OpenVPN is the industry’s gold standard as it provides excellent security and good speeds. IKEv2 is also secure enough and faster than OpenVPN. The protocol’s biggest strength is that it allows switching networks, and it's very good at reconnecting. It's the preferred protocol for mobile devices and the one used by VPNhub for its mobile apps.

Overall, VPNhub’s security very good.

VPNhub offers several features.

Kill Switch

A kill switch is an essential feature for any VPN as it helps prevent accidental exposure. This type of exposure can happen if the VPN unexpectedly loses its connection to a server. To prevent your real identity from being exposed, the kill switch kicks in and drops all internet connections.

VPNhub provides a kill switch that can be activated from within the app. The kill switch only works when you don’t intentionally click the disconnect button, and we found it to be very effective. It works well with both IKEv2 and OpenVPN.

Stealth (Obfuscation)

VPNhub offers obfuscation through a feature known as scramble. The feature helps users bypass VPN blocks by obfuscating OpenVPN traffic and making it look like regular HTTPS traffic. This makes the VPN avoid deep packet inspection (dpi) blocking, which is used to prevent VPN use in highly censored countries.

However, the VPN still states while they do their best to enhance internet freedom in every country, the VPN might still not work in some countries. These include Burma/Myanmar, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, and China.

Split Tunneling (Limited)

VPNhub provides split tunneling. This is a feature that allows users to select apps that can connect to the internet without going through the VPN tunnel. This means that even when the VPN is connected, those apps will access the internet using your regular connection.

VPNhub’s split tunneling feature is known as Smart VPN, but it is limited in that it is only available on the Android app.

Auto (Re)connection

Auto reconnection is a feature that makes the VPN try to re-establish a connection when it's lost unexpectedly. The feature eases your work by ensuring that the VPN is always connected, and it is very useful, especially if you combine it with the kill switch.

VPNhub’s auto reconnection is available for both Android and desktop apps. On Android, there's also an autoconnection option that allows you to connect the VPN when the device starts or when the app is launched.

VPNhub Server Network

VPNhub has a server network that consists of 1,000+ servers spread across 80 locations 53 countries. These servers are well spread across all regions, and you’ll find servers in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.

On the app, there are no marked specialized servers. However, the available servers are well listed and can be sorted in terms of countries (alphabetically), cities (alphabetically), and their load (percentage). There’s also a search button that allows you to search either a city or a country.

All servers offer unlimited bandwidth and server switches.

VPNhub provides multiple plans that range from one month to 3 years. All these plans offer the same features and functionalities, so the only difference is the subscription period. The discount offered increases with the subscription length.

Overall, VPNhub is highly-priced. Its 1-month plan is more expensive than all our top 10 VPN services of 2021. The VPN charges just $2.49 a month for the first two years and then $4.9 a month for the yearly plan.

VPNhub has only been accepting payments through credit cards, but they have recently added Cryptocurrency and UnionPay.

The cryptocurrency option is a good touch as it helps users pay for the service anonymously. However, the absence of PayPal is highly conspicuous as the method allows users to cancel pre-approved payments easily.

The VPNhub website is well-designed and easy to use. However, it doesn’t provide much information about VPN as most top VPN service providers do.

You can start creating an account by clicking “Get VPNhub now” or “subscribe.” This will direct you to the subscription page, where you can choose a payment method and your preferred plan. From there, provide your email address and complete the purchase. You will then receive an email to activate your account and create a password.

Ease of use

To give you an idea of the level of user-friendliness you can expect from VPNhub, we installed the VPN on Windows, Android, iOS, and Fire TV.

Desktop App (Windows)

You can download VPNhub for Mac or Windows from the VPN’s website without logging in. The download file for Windows is about 17 MBs, and it shouldn't take long to install. You can then log in using your credentials.

Here’s what the app looks like after logging in.

Clicking the connect button will automatically connect you to the nearest server. You can also choose your preferred server by clicking the displayed server. The server list is not displayed according to any pattern, but you can sort it by listing countries in alphabetical order. You can also sort the cities and the server load or use the search option to get a city or country.

To customize the VPN, click the settings icon on the top right side. The app will give you several options grouped into General, Connections, Logs, Licenses, and About. The first two carry the customization options.

Under General, you can determine when the app starts and connects to a server. You can also activate the kill switch and auto-reconnection.

Under the connection tab, you can select the protocol you'd like to use and re-install the TAP driver in case of any connection issues. If you select the OpenVPN protocol, you can choose between UDP and TCP, activate scramble (obfuscation), and select the cipher level.

After everything is set, you can then connect to a server. The VPN will display your virtual location, your public IP address, and the selected cipher. The latter only applies to OpenVPN.

Overall, VPNhub is not the most appealing VPN for Windows. However, it is easy to use and does its job quite well. There’s a smart connection option, the servers are easy to sort, and the kill switch works perfectly. We also didn’t experience any connection issues during our tests.

Mobile Apps

The VPNhub Android and iOS applications have a similar interface, and they follow a simplistic approach that makes them easy to use. On the main page (server tab), there’s a connection button, a display for the selected location, an upgrade tab, and a profile tab. You can connect to the displayed server with just a single click of the connection button.

Under the upgrade tab, the VPN advertises its yearly plan as a way of saving money, something which can affect user experience. On the other hand, the Profile tab lets you customize how the app looks through a light/ dark mode and a discreet icon (if "hub" in yellow looks too familiar). There’s also a support section that provides an FAQ within the app and several links to the VPN’s website.

The VPNhub app for iOS doesn't have any configuration options, which means you can't even set the app to auto-connect.

The VPNhub app for Android is more generous as it provides auto-connection options and several features. These include split tunneling, kill switch, and bypassing VPN blocking.

Overall, the two apps are well designed and easy to use. The only major issue is that the iOS is too stripped-down and doesn’t have any configuration options. The upsells for the annual plan can also become very annoying considering that they've been placed on the main screen.

Fire TV/ Android TV

VPNhub provides Android TV apps, and they are available on both the Amazon App Store and the Google Play Store. The two apps take a different approach to the mobile apps to make them suited to the big screen.

The design is quite simplistic but awesome. You can easily select a server and connect the VPN.

The app also provides auto-reconnect and obfuscation options if you stay in a country where VPN use is not encouraged.

How fast is VPNhub?

VPNs almost always have an impact on your connection speeds due to the encryption provided and the new servers introduced. This means that you need to analyze the kind of speeds that a VPN has to offer, and we conducted several tests to give you an idea of what to expect from VPNhub. Our tests were carried out on a Windows 10 PC using a 50 Mbps connection.

We did the first tests using the default OpenVPN connection and connected to multiple nearby and distant servers. Servers in the same country gave us an average of 38 Mbps with an upload of 10 Mbps. After connecting to several distant servers, the speeds averaged 25 Mbps to 32 Mbps with a download speed of 8 Mbps. There was no significant difference in speeds after changing from AES-256-CBC to AEs-128-CBC.

Using IKEv2 gave the speeds a boost, with nearby servers averaging 42 Mbps and distant servers averaging 30 Mbps to 38 Mbps.

VPNhub Customer Support

The VPNhub customer support is poor, to say the least. The VPN doesn’t provide live chat support, which is the industry’s standard support method. The only way you can reach out to the team via the website is by filling a ticket form. We tried using it several times, and we didn't get a reply or even an automatic acknowledgment that our request had been received. We then reached out to the team via email, but we didn’t receive a response either.

Overall, VPNhub’s customer support is quite a disappointment, especially for a VPN whose subscriptions are some of the most expensive.
